Who Made It: SERRV international is one of the first fair trade organizations in the world. They began their mission by helping displaced European refugees trade their handcrafts for income after the Second World War. Since then, SERRV has extended their reach to 24 countries worldwide, working to empower over 8,000 artisans and farmers every year by selling their beautiful handcrafts.
Since 2006, SERRV International has partnered with basket weavers in Ghana, providing a long-term trading partnership and interest-free advance payment for our orders. Through sales of their products, more than 940 basket makers from 17 different communities near the city of Bolgatanga receive a fair price for each handmade "Bolga" basket, as well as access to business skills training, financial services, raw materials, and marketing outlets. Funds from basket sales are also invested in the community, including construction of gathering shelters for production and straw storage "banks," which allows the organization to purchase and store natural elephant grass in bulk.
