Artisans in the highlands of western Kenya hand carve this versatile little bowl from soft kisii stone, also known as soapstone. Nairobi artisans hand dye to a rich red and etch with a sweet depiction of a pair of giraffe friends.
Who Made It: Swahili Modern is a fair trade company that works directly with artisans in several African countries including Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda and Zambia. Artisan communities have reliable long-term income sources and it provides vital employment for rural women in particular.
